1 Year with a LVAD

April 4th, a date that will always stick with me.  How could it not.  I had my LVAD impanted a year ago today.  As I was walking the halls at work today I found myself wondering when I will see most of the team again.  I was asked about 5 times today what the contraption is that I am wearing.  Lots of well wishes and disbelief from those that don't know the story.  51 and a butt............

  1. Hi Peter,
My name is Carm and I have a client who is being evaluated for the LVAD. She does not have family and is being told she needs 24/7 care for 4-6 weeks after surgery but insurance won't cover this expense. She has been told a nursing home/rehab won't take her with a pump. What did you do and how intensive was the need for care after you had the pump implanted? Please respond so I can continue explore options for this woman. Thank yo.

  2. I was in the hospital for 3.5 weeks after my surgery and then was home with family. I was critically ill and 37 years old, I couldn't walk by myself without support for 3 weeks and had a PIC line for 20 days. The first month after the VAD implant has more to do with make sure there are no complications like GI bleed, clotting, and your INR is stable. By 6 weeks I would expect a level of autonomy though
